Oaklawn
Hospital, Marshall, Michigan
On
March 23, 1999, Jeannette Glen, Director of Environmental
Services, Oaklawn Hospital of Marshall, Michigan, requested a
Walsh Waste Audit from Lisa Hardesty of BFI Medical waste.
Lisa
logged in and ordered a Walsh Waste Audit for the following
Thursday. She then called Jeanette at the hospital who
scheduled time for an OR visit, and gathered the required
internal information. A few days
before the scheduled audit, Lisa logged into her secure page on
Walsh’s web site to enter information about the hospital and
its waste costs and volumes. On the day of the audit Lisa
met Jeanette for coffee at 8 a.m.
and reviewed the day’s plans.
They
started in the ICU and worked their way down. With the
Walsh Waste Auditor they were able to tour and photograph the
waste in labs, clinical units, Labor and Delivery, and
Emergency. During their OR visit, they gowned up and
toured a few suites. They watched setup and teardown to
get a good grasp of the waste management practices in place.
In
many departments they took a moment to chat with various Nurses,
Orderlies, Technicians and other Staff to ask questions and
confirm what they were seeing.
In
the afternoon they completed their audit, after visiting 15
departments and speaking with dozens of people.
That
evening Lisa uploaded her day’s work via modem to the Walsh
Data Center. Within 10 minutes she was able to download a
complete word document with all of her cost figures, comments
and photos formatted into a finished report. After a few
editing changes, Lisa requested three copies of the
document, a variety of appendices, and a PowerPoint
presentation.
Walsh
processed the report the following day and Lisa received her
hard copies the day after.
